2019 FULL ITINERARY


Day 1: Sunday, September 22nd:  DEPART USA - Flight to Sardinia

Depart USA with connecting flight to the Italian Province of Sardinia, the second largest island in the Mediterranean.

Day 2: Monday, September 23rd:  ARRIVE IN SARDINIA - Oliena

Upon arrival in Sardinia, you will be met by your tour manager Oliviero Olivieri, who is leading the City Rhythm group for the 10th consecutive year! Oliviero is a native of Sardinia and is eager to share his passion for this beautiful and undiscovered land as he escorts you on this exciting journey.  On route to your hotel you will enjoy a panoramic tour of the region and the captivating valleys and mountains of the Supramonte range.  Hotel Su Gologone is set in the village of Oliena at the foot of Monte Corrasi, the mountain’s highest peak.  The hotel and its surroundings project Sardinian art, food and traditions, amid unspoiled and dramatic scenery.  Relax in this setting and at the hotel pool before a welcome dinner at their acclaimed restaurant.

Day 3: Tuesday, September 24th:  THE HEART OF SARDINIAN CULTURE – Barbagia, Orosolo

After breakfast at the hotel, the focus of the day is on the traditions of Sardinian life. You will travel through the Barbagia region, considered the heart of Sardinia with its ancient customs that have survived alongside modern life for centuries.  You will visit the village of Orgosolo, known for its elaborate murals that document the region’s social discontent.  Orgosolo is also known for its ancient method of baking bread “Pane Carasau”, which you will taste at a local bakery.  Lunch will be a unique experience as you dine on suckling pig, lamb and Sardinian cheeses, al fresco in the company of a local shepherd.  In the afternoon you return to the hotel to relax before an evening of entertainment by City Rhythm.

Day 4: Wednesday, September 25th:  HISTORY AND NATURAL BEAUTY - Bosa, Alghero

After breakfast, you leave the hotel for transfer to Alghero. The drive takes you through the Nuraghi Valley, a region rich in bronze age remains and medieval history.  You will visit the archeological site of Tamuli, then the  Carthaginian town of Bosa, situated on the River Temo and dominated by the ruins of the Castle Serravalle.   It is one of the prettiest towns in Sardinia and the best place to taste the world famous Malvasia, which you will sample at a local winery. In the afternoon you will arrive in Alghero via a stunning winding road that runs along unforgettable seascapes.   Alghero retains an air of the Spanish region of Catalonia since it was once part of the kingdom of Aragon, with building styles reminiscent of Barcelona.  Explore its wonderful sights such as the main harbor, the Cathedral of Santa Maria, Piazza Ginnasio and the sunset from the Catalan walls facing the sea. The town is full of fine restaurants to enjoy dinner on your own before gathering in the evening for musical entertainment by City Rhythm.

Day 5: Thursday, September 26th:  AMAZING GROTTOS & MYSTERIOUS NURAGHE - Capo Caccia, Nuraghe Site

After breakfast at the Hotel we drive to the beautiful promontory of Capo Caccia for an amazing view of the Mediterranean Sea.  The cape is home to a preserve with a renowned labyrinth of caves, including the Grotte di Nettuno.  A private boat will take you out to the fascinating grottos.  Later you will go to the archeological site of Nuraghe Palmavera for a walking tour.  Your guide will explain the significance of these remarkable dwellings dating back to 1300 B.C. and found only in Sardinia. A traditional lunch will be prepared for you at a small farmhouse before returning to Alghero for leisure time in town and along the waterfront, then an evening of music.

Day 6: Friday, September 27th:  NORTHERN SARDINIAN LIFESTYLE - Castelsardo, Tempio Pausania, Ferry Trip

Your last day in Sardinia begins with breakfast and free time to go to the beach or further explore Alghero.  Later you depart to the historic town of Castelsardo, fortified by a 13th century castle and full of handcrafting artisans of carpets, baskets and ceramics.  You will then experience a relaxing  luncheon of genuine northern Sardinian dishes and music by City Rhythm.  In the late afternoon you’ll continue toward the east coast and stop for a casual Passiagatta (evening stroll) in the 16th century village of Tempio Pausania, enjoying apertivos and shopping before heading to Olbia to catch the overnight ferry.  Private sleeping cabins are reserved and there is a bar and lounge on board.

Day 7: Saturday, September 28th:  ARRIVAL IN THE ETERNAL CITY - Rome

You will disembark from the overnight ferry early in the morning at the port of Civitavecchia.  Enjoy a relaxed breakfast at a local cafe before the 90 minute ride to the center of Rome on your private coach.  The ride will include a panoramic tour as you enter the eternal city.  After arriving at your centrally located hotel, Oliviero will lead a walking orientation tour to some of the City’s most famous sites like the Spanish Steps, Trevi Fountain, Piazza Navonna, iconic churches and more.  Enjoy Saturday night in Rome on your own with countless restaurants, bars and shops to experience.  (Includes: Breakfast, Walking Tour of Central Rome)

Day 8: Sunday, September 29th:  THE CASTELLI ROMANI - Castel Gandolfo and the Roman Countryside

Enjoy a leisurely Sunday morning in Rome and prepare for a lovely ride along the Appian Way to the Castelli Romani (Roman Castle Towns).  The natural beauty of these picturesque villages surrounding Rome is highlighted by the town of Castel Gandolfo on the shores of a volcanic lake.  This small town is the Pope’s summer residence and has become a favorite destination on past City Rhythm trips.  The warmth of the local residents will be evident as they host a City Rhythm concert on the main street and you enjoy a dinner of regional cuisine.

Day 9: Monday, September 30th:  THE CITY AT YOUR LEISURE - Rome and Optional Tours

Enjoy breakfast at the Hotel and a full day to enjoy the city as you wish.  Walk to the Colosseum, Roman Forum, Victor Emmanuel Monument or see the amazing treasures of the many churches and museums.  If this is your first time in Rome, join the optional tour of the Vatican and visit the Vatican Museum, Sistine Chapel, St. Peter’s Basilica and Main Square, with roundtrip bus transportation from the hotel, pre-paid admission that skips the entrance line, and a guide.  The group reconvenes in the evening for a farewell Roman dinner.
